Round ’em Up: Sunday

15 06 2008

UPDATE 06-15-08 – Here’s something a little more Round ’em Up worthy.

Joel Sherman from the New York Post says that Prince Fielder could become available by July 31st, but certainly during the off-season.

I knew the Brewers were most likely going to trade Prince, rather than giving him a long-term contract, but I thought they would wait until 2010 or so.  It makes sense though, as the Brewers have a wealth of first base candidates in the minors.  It would also ease the pocketbook of Mark Attanasio going into next season.  J.J. Hardy, Rickie Weeks, Ryan Braun, and Corey Hart will all see their salaries jump.  Trading Prince could alleviate that strain.

I don’t even know if this counts as a Round ’em Up. There is literally nothing out there on the blogosphere this morning, other than a couple Milwaukee JS articles. Lame.

  • Ned Yost defends leaving Julian Tavarez in the game last night. Let me tell you, it doesn’t make much sense. He says things like, “He was the last guy I was going to use,” said Yost. “I felt like he could use one more day off.” He is talking about Guillermo Mota at this point.

He then backs it up with the comment: “I was trying to win this game. I don’t think about tomorrow at all in that situation.”

  • Here’s an article about the core group of players down in Huntsville. It appears that Milwaukee will leave all of them in Huntsville throughout the season to instill a winning attitude in the prospects. It can’t hurt, I suppose. The article also notes that Brett Lawrie has every intention to sign, but it may be a while. Look for him to sign a bonus that is greater than then $1.5M given to the 17th pick in the draft. Lawrie has the leverage of a college scholarship, as well.

Looks like the bloggers took the day off today like the Brewers defense did last night.

Do you think Lawrie is waiting because he wants to play a tournament for the National team? I remember hearing something about that.

Yeah. That and he may be playing in the summer Olympics. I guess that’s important too…haha.

weird that we would trade prince just so that we can pay rickie weeks and jj hardy more. that doesn’t seem to make sense. he’s one of the elite players in the league and, even if he did get $10 m in arbitration, we’re paying gagne that much this year. and at a time when we’ve obviously switched more to a win-now attitude. gamel and laporta are still in AA.

i mean, trade prince if we get a bunch of talent that makes the team better. but even in arbitration he’s not a budget buster considering the contracts we’ve given to FAs in recent years.
