Kendall to bat 9th in batting order

8 03 2008

Ned Yost officially decided that Jason Kendall will bat in the 9th spot for the Brewers this season.  It is an interesting move for the Crew, but statistics say that the team will score more runs with Kendall in the 9th spot.

This batting order will allow for Rickie Weeks and Mike Cameron to bat with more runners on base ahead of them.  Yost stressed that it takes a special player to bat in the 9th spot.  It needs to be someone that will get on base and take a lot of pitches.  Jason fits that mold pretty well, especially this spring.

Much of the media seems to think that Jason will take this as a slap in the face or will be seriously concerned about it.  I do not understand why.  In this role, he becomes almost a second leadoff hitter, someone that is important to the offense.  Kendall stressed in the article that he simply wants to do what’s best for the team, and he does not care about personal numbers.  If batting ninth will make the Brewers score more runs, then he’s all for it.  Well duh…

I’m still shocked that Ned is going to go through with this plan.  The numbers show that the increased run rate will only be a few runs throughout the season, but perhaps they will matter down the stress.  If Jason is able to bounce back after last season, it could conceivably be more.  Still, it’s going to be very awkward and take some time to get used to it.  I’m not sold on the move yet, but I suppose I have no choice but to support it.

You’d think they’d move Braun and Fielder up to give them more plate appearances as well. Sure, there won’t be as many men on in front of them in the first inning, but thereafter it’ll be the same as before, only more often.
