Hardy avoids arbitration

15 02 2008

UPDATE 02-15-08 7:42PM – The deal is officially $2.65M. I guess the Brewers “sweetened” their deal a little today to avoid arbitration. As with Dave Bush, Melvin is able to sign another young Brewer below the midpoint of the arbitration dispute.
J.J. Hardy and the Milwaukee Brewers agreed to a one-year deal today. Melvin must have been blowing smoke when he said yesterday that the talks between the two sides were all-but-dead.

The official figures are not known yet, but Tom Haudricourt reports that it is supposedly just below the midpoint mark of $2.725M. This keeps Melvin’s record of never going to an arbitration hearing with a player still intact.

J.J. Hardy and the Brewers had struggled to agree to a deal in recent weeks. Hardy had submitted an arbitration request of $3.05M, while the Brewers organization countered with a proposal of $2.4M. Perhaps Hardy and his agent backed down from their request after Melvin made it known that he had booked his plane ticket to Florida in preparation for the arbitration hearing.

Milwaukee now has no players in arbitration with the club. I’ll get you the exact figures of the contract when they become available.
