Sheets Fourth Best Pitcher from 2001 Prospect List

9 02 2008

John Sickels from Minor League Ball has a great series running.  He reviews the Top 50 Prospects from each year and analyzes how they panned out.  A great example of why teams trade prospects for proven players.  You never know if prospects will reach their potential.  Very interesting stuff!

In his most recent post, John analyzes the prospects from 2001.  Ben Sheets was rated the fourth best overall prospect in 2001.  After adjusting the rankings to the big league stage, Sheets is the fourth best pitcher from the 2001 class.  The only pitchers better from the class of 2001 are Roy Oswalt, C.C. Sabathia, and Josh Beckett.  Just imagine where Ben could have been on that list had he not had injury problems.

Other interesting names from the list include former Brewers, Kevin Mench and Nick Neugebauer.  Neither lived up to his full potential as a Top 50 Prospect.
